RoughRider U14 2014-2015 Team Overview

We are looking for young men  that have a willingness to learn, work, and improve both as a hockey player and person.

Development

The emphasis for this year’s team is development.  Not only the tangible skill development, but the development of the heart and mind.  Practices are focused on the development of the fundamentals.

On-Ice Development

Developing the players ability to pass and move without the puck will be a big point of emphasis.  Players will be involved in a lot  passing, receiving, footwork, and situational drills on a consistent basis.  The U14 team will have on average a minimum of three  touches per week rangin from 1 hour to 1.5 hours.

Off-Ice Development

Our Off-Ice training will consist of two parts.  First and foremost there will be a rigorous and consistent program with a huge emphasis on leg strength and explosiveness.  We will also implement a lot of learning through the use of video. Players can be expected to watch edited videos that break down and critique their play.

The Rough Riders are lucky to have Jason Oswald as the strength and conditioning coach.  The goal is not just to get bigger, faster, stronger, but to teach them how to train properly, prevent injuries, and establish habits that players will bring with them to the higher levels.  Players will work out off the ice three times per week, twice with coach Oswald and once with coach Satterstrom.  The off-ice training will be an integral part of their development throughout the entire year.

A healthy diet will be required.  The players will have recommendations given to them at the start of the season.  This is a key component to players receiving the most out of the 2013-2014 season.  All players have a responsibility to themselves and their teammates to be at their best every day.  This is only possible with a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, and quality protein.

On-Ice Expectations

Every game and every practice is an opportunity to get better.  The willingness to show up everyday with this mindset and attitude is expected by players and coaches. The requirements for ice time are simple, Attitude and Effort.

Off-Ice Expectations

Players are expected to maintain a GPA that is fair and relevant to their past performances in school.  We understand the demands of playing AAA hockey but is not an excuse for a poor academic record.

Players that choose to engage in alcohol, drug, or tobacco related activities are not welcome on this team.

Players are expected to be on-time (barring uncontrollable circumstances) to all team functions.

Players are expected to show respect for other people at all times. This includes teammates, coaches, parents, teachers, officials, airline hosts, etc... Disrespect in any way can result in disciplinary action.

The team will participate in at least one, but more likely several, community service activities.  Attendance will be required by all players.

Game Schedule and Travel

The U14 team will play around 60 games in the 2014 - 2015 season.  We will be travelling to Detroit MI, Boston MA, Providence RI, Hartford CT, Medicine Hat SK, and Minnesota.
