Pikes Peak Miners Bring Home Impressive 4-1 NAPHL Weekend

The Pikes Peak Miners 16U team marched into Troy, Michigan ready to battle. Kicking off the weekend, the Miners had teams attention when they handed highly ranked Omaha with a 2-1 loss in a shootout. Miners goalie Fessenden, stood tall, while his team mates battled to slide one by Omaha goalie late in the first ending the first with a 1-0 lead with a goal from Dillon Milliron (Medina). The battled continued, but left the scoreboard the same at the end of the second 1-0. Omaha managed to get one past Fessenden late in the third forcing a shootout. Shootout goals by Garret Medina and Calvon Boots made for an impressive win for the Miners.

The New Jersey Titans were up next for the Miners and the Titans quickly put up a couple goals, before forward, Garret Medina (Milliron, Hanson) added to the scoreboard. The Titans added a few more in the third, with the only goal for the Miners coming from forward Martin Pietraszek (Armstrong, Boots) but too late as the Miners drop the game to the Titans.

Sunday afternoon the Miners faced the Madison Capitols and let them know they were there to battle. Hitting the scoreboard in the second period was Miners forward, Martin Pietraszek (Kiemel, Boots). The Capitols answered back, but not before Miners foward Ross Hanson put away two goals (Hanson, Medina, Ridgley) (Hanson, Boots, Medina) to finalize the scoreboard with a 3-1 win with goalie Fessenden standing strong in net.

The final game on Monday morning had the Miners facing the Everett Jr. Silvertips. The Pikes Peak Miners jumped ahead with two goals in the first with the first goal by Martin Pietraszek (Kiemel, Ridgley) and the second being tallied by Kiemel (Boots). The Miners held a 2-1 lead at the end of the second and headed into the third with momentum. Third period the Miners shut down the Silvertips, with goalie Joe Chekan, standing strong, and Miners forward Ross Hanson (Medina,Luther) with not only one, but two goals in the third (Hanson, Milliron, Luther) and the win for the Miners.

The Pikes Peak Miners will head to Troy, Michigan in February to play in the NAPHL final playoff showcase.

Pikes Peak 16's Roll Into Chicago for Second NAPHL Showcase

Head Coach Luke Fulghum and the Pikes Peak Miners Hockey Team headed to Chicago for their second NAPHL showcase of the season.

First off in Romeoville, Illinois, the Miners faced the Pursuit of Excellence. Both teams battled hard and kept the crowd guessing as they both came to the end of the first locked at zero. The second period POE kept the Miners quiet in scoring and tallied 3 in the second. The third period the Miner's added a goal by forward Ross Hanson (Pietraszek, Ridgley), but it would be the lone goal for the Miners, dropping game one, 5-1.

The single game Saturday was against the Arizona Bobcats, with both teams locked at one goal a piece at the ice make. Goal by Miner Nikita Penzov (Polaski, Milliron), would be the only goal in a very tight match against the Bobcats, as late in the third, the Bobcats goal ended the back and forth, high paced game, with a 2-1 loss to the Miners.

The weekend continued with an early morning Sunday match up with the Lansing Capitals. The single goal by Miner's forward Ross Hanson (N.Kiemel), blew by the goalie in the first minute of the third period. The goal was not enough to get the Miners up and running, as they fell to the Capitals.

Late into Sunday, the Miners faced the San Jose Sharks for their second game of the day. The first period was anyone's game as both teams evenly matched closed out the first period 0-0 and and it wasn't until into the second half did the Miners and Sharks rack up points. The Sharks came out strong and put up three goals, but not before the Miners answered back with two goals by forward Ross Hanson (Pietraszek and unassisted), to cut their lead 3-2. The Sharks capitalized on a power play and the Miners fell to the Sharks in a close 4-2 game.

Finally, Monday morning, the Miners awoke to hit the ice and play the California Titans, a game that was the most exciting of the weekend. With the third game the Miners kept teams at zeros at the end of the first, Ross Hanson (N. Kiemel) hit the scoreboard first to give the Miners a 1-0 lead...only to have the Titans tie it up.  The Titans went ahead in the third, only to have forward Griffen Medina (Penzov, Cramer) of the Miners, tie the game and force the teams into a shoot out. Going through all five shooters, the deciding goal was the Titans, with a tough loss for the Miners.

Next up, the Miners will travel to Omaha, Nebraska to take on the U16's in a three non-league game series.

Pikes Peak Miners Take On the Rocky Mountain RoughRiders

This past Saturday, September 27th, the Pikes Peak Miners 16U National team took on the Rocky Mountain RoughRiders for their first league home and home series for the 2014-2015 season. The RoughRiders were first to sneak one by the Miners midway into the first, but the Miners answered back quickly on a power play goal from Kodie Ridgely (Boots, Penzov) and closing out the back and forth first period tied, 1-1. The second period proved to be a bit more of a challenge with penalties as the Miners allowed three power play goals and one even strength goal, leaving the second period scoreless for the Miners.

The ice make proved to be refreshing for the Miners as they came out and battled hard, shutting down the RoughRiders and allowing no goals in the third, with Miners goalie Joe Chekan in net. The game ended with the Miners down 5-1 in a hard fought match for both teams.

Sunday, the Miners hosted the RoughRiders at Sertich, with another battle between these two rivals. The back and forth play brought on a scoring frenzy for the teams, as Miners players notched two goals, the first by Nikita Penzov (Daniels, Hanson) and the second by Ross Hanson (Pietraszek), but head into the second period trailing 3-2. The second period the Miners came out with a quick goal by Dillon Milliron (Ignatovich, Beaver) putting the game at a 3-3 tie. The Rocky Mountain Roughriders closed out the period with two goals, and headed into the third period with a 5-3 lead.

Following the ice make, both teams came out in full force, keeping the score quiet until late into the third when the RoughRiders scored on Miners keeper David Fessenden with a 6-3 final.  The Pikes Peak Miners will face the Colorado Thunderbirds in a home/home series the first weekend in October.

Miners First NAPHL Showcase of the Season

As the Pikes Peak Miners set out for their first regular season contest, there were a lot of new faces. David Fessenden happens to be our only returner from the season before. The boys had a tough test ahead of them. Hampered by injuries to our Captains Noah Kiemel, Calvon Boots, and our speedster Brenden Polaski serving a suspension we had our work cut out for us. With over half the team with no Tier 1 AAA experience we set out to Blaine to make our mark.

Game 1- VS. Minnesota Elite Development:
In our first matchup in the NAPHL showcase we came out strong putting the highly skilled MED team to the test. Unfortunately, bad penalties put us in the hole early and MED capitalized on their chances, going in at the end of the 1st with a 2-0 lead. We bounced back as a team and had a strong Second period. David Fessenden was stellar in net and gave us a chance to stay in the game. We did just that, Ross Hanson got the Miners on the board with a smart heads up play from Ethan Daniels. Things were looking good going into the 3rd down 1 goal. We played well for the first 5 minutes of the 3rd and had opportunities to tie the game. Once again we got into penalty trouble, which seemed to be our theme as the weekend progressed. While busy killing penalty after penalty, we became tired. MED popped 2 quick goals and the deficit was now 3. We got one back with a slick passing play from Ethan Daniels to hit Nick Kiemel for a breakaway. It was a tremendous finish by Nick but time was running out and the hole was to deep to dig ourselves out.
MED 4- PPM 2
Game 2- VS. Western Michigan Hounds:
Game 2 saw our boys tested, with less than a 5 hour turn around it was time to play 2 games in 1 day. Still amped from our attempted comeback against MED we were able to get on the board first. Ethan Daniels was able to get the puck to the net and with a fortunate redirection and we had the lead. Sadly, it was short lived. Potentially, we may have been more skilled than our opponent. But, 10 times out of 10 hard work beats talent if talent does not work. WMH was able to score 3 goals in a 7 minute span taking the lead 3-1 with 13 minutes remaining in the 2nd. We were fortunate to keep it close and bring it to within 1 on a power play goal from Dillon Milliron. In a close game we lost focus and once again penalties started to surface. We were out worked and tired and the game went south.
WMH 8- PPM 2
Game 3- VS. California Titans:
Game 3 we finally got our penalties in order and played to our potential. From the puck drop we put CT on their heels and brought the pressure to them. With good puck movement and support the Miners started to gel. CT goaltender was amazing and made big save after big save, keeping CT in the game. No score after 2 periods. Our pressure throughout the game led to a crucial power play opportunity. We capitalized, with great movement our sniper Ross Hanson was able to bury the puck with exceptional movement from Ethan Daniels, Dillon Milliron, and Colton Schneiderman. We ran with the momentum and continued to play a complete game. With a gutsy effort, Tom Ignatovich blocked a shot from his point and went on a breakaway. He was hauled down and received a penalty shot. Tom capitalized on this opportunity beating the excellent CT goaltender through his armpit. David Fessenden shut the door and earned our first shutout of the season. The Miners had earned their first win of the NAPHL showcase and it was good to see smiles in the room!
PPM 2- CT 0
Game 4- VS. Compuware
After riding a high on their first win the boys came out flying against the highly touted opponent. It was a high paced back and forth game. Feeling confident the Miners took a 1st period lead. Griffen Medina bulled his way out of the corner and took the puck to the net. With a tremendous finish the Miners looked to build on the lead. As the game progressed both teams had their chances. Compuware managed to tie the game late in the 2nd period on a missile through a screen that Fessenden could not see. As we went into the locker room the score was tied. The 3rd period saw a complete disciplinary collapse by the Miners as we took a penalty on the power play behind the play. Sure enough Compuware capitalized and took the lead 2-1. Undeciplined penalties and selfish play lead to a poor finish in a game that we had control of. We gave up 4 goals in the 3rd period as a result of our lack of discipline. David Fessenden played unbelievable and deserved a better result and effort from his teammates.
COM 5 - PPM 1
Game 5- VS. St. Louis Selects
Although failing to finish the game against Compuware we took a lot of good habits into a match up against a solid STL team. The Miners dominated the whole game and it showed. Joe Chekan was a brick wall in net and smothered any second shot attempts that were presented his way. STL's goalie was outstanding and kept them in the game. Scoreless after 1. Our pursuit and tenacity took over and we were able to gain the lead. Ethan Daniels got the Miners on the board with a beautiful shot to the short side glove off a great cycle from Ross Hanson. Less than 2 minutes later we took a commanding lead off a great individual effort. Ross Hanson committed to blocking a shot and was rewarded. On a breakaway Ross undressed the STL goaltender on a silky deke, beating him 5 hole. The Miners had played a complete game for 50 minutes and 23 seconds. With 37 seconds left STL got a goal off of a couple crucial defensive miscues. STL, with their backs against the wall and the Miners on their heels, STL was able to get the equalizer 20 seconds later. Joe Chekan had played a flawless game and deserved better. As we headed into a shootout we went 3 for 5, STL matched. The shootout continued blank for the next 10 shooters and in the end we could not find the twine, STL did. It was disappointing to lose a game that we dominated for 50 minutes and 23 seconds. Lesson learned!
STL 3 - PPM 2 (Shootout Loss)

In all, it was a underachieving weekend for the 16u squad. A lot of hard lessons were learned and the team will be better for it. With over 100 minutes in selfish penalties our record was a direct result. Despite the penalties and lack of scoring our team played great 5 on 5. The one upside to the weekend was that our penalty kill was 47 of 48 on the kill for 98%. In order for the Miners to have success in the future we must be more disciplined. The goal is to get better as a team and individuals everyday. For the most part those strides were taken. The Miners have the potential and capability of doing great things this season. Its a long year and we will move on.
